Gingivitis is a common and mild form of gum disease that causes redness, swelling, and bleeding of the gums. It’s usually caused by poor oral hygiene, which leads to plaque buildup along the gumline. If left untreated, gingivitis can progress into more serious gum disease (periodontitis), which can threaten your oral and overall health. While it’s important to visit your dentist for professional care, there are also several effective home remedies that can help reduce inflammation, fight bacteria, and promote healthier gums. These natural approaches are most effective when combined with a good oral hygiene routine.

Saltwater Rinse

A simple saltwater rinse can help reduce inflammation and kill bacteria in the mouth. Salt has natural antiseptic properties and can soothe irritated gums.

How to use:
Mix ½ teaspoon of salt into a glass of warm water. Swish the solution around your mouth for 30 seconds, then spit it out. Repeat twice a day, but avoid overuse, as too much salt can harm your enamel.

Hydrogen Peroxide Rinse

Hydrogen peroxide can reduce plaque and bleeding gums by killing harmful bacteria. It also helps whiten teeth and freshen breath.

How to use:
Dilute 3 percent hydrogen peroxide with equal parts water. Swish it around your mouth for about 30 seconds, then spit it out. Do not swallow. Use this remedy 2 to 3 times a week, not daily, to avoid irritation.

Oil Pulling

An ancient Ayurvedic remedy, oil pulling involves swishing oil around your mouth to “pull” toxins and bacteria from the gums and teeth. Coconut oil is especially popular due to its anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties.

How to use:
Place 1 tablespoon of coconut oil in your mouth and swish for 10 to 20 minutes. Spit it into a trash can (not the sink, as it can clog drains) and rinse your mouth with warm water. Follow up with brushing. Do this once daily.

Aloe Vera Gel

Aloe vera is known for its soothing, anti-inflammatory properties and can help reduce gum swelling and bleeding.

How to use:
Use 100 percent pure aloe vera gel (without added sugars or alcohol) and apply it directly to the gums. Leave it on for a few minutes, then rinse. Repeat 2 to 3 times daily.

Baking Soda Paste

Baking soda neutralizes acids in the mouth and can help reduce bacteria that cause gingivitis.

How to use:
Mix baking soda with a small amount of water to form a paste. Gently brush your gums and teeth with this mixture for about 1 minute, then rinse thoroughly. Use this remedy a few times a week.

Gingivitis can often be managed with improved oral care and natural home remedies. These simple, affordable solutions can reduce discomfort and inflammation while supporting your gum health. If symptoms persist or worsen, be sure to schedule a visit with your dentist to prevent further progression of gum disease.
