If you need a tooth extracted, it’s normal to be a little nervous. The good news is that this extremely common treatment is nothing to worry about. Still, if you find yourself struggling to feel calm about your upcoming procedure, here are a few things you can try to help soothe your nerves at your appointment.
Talk About It
If you’re feeling extremely fearful, it may be beneficial to speak to a trusted friend, therapist, or counselor. They may be able to help pinpoint what exactly is scaring you, and help you find ways to overcome it. Even if they can’t, sometimes just talking about a problem can make it feel a lot less scary.
Play Some Music
Music has the power to energize you as well as to calm you down. Piping some tunes on your earbuds during your extraction can help relax you and distract you from what’s going on around you, providing you with much needed comfort.
Don’t Forget to Breathe
Doing some breathing exercises can help you relax and focus on something other than your surroundings. Pick a happy memory or think about a peaceful place you’d like to be, like by the ocean or in a lush, flowery meadow.
Use a Stress or Fidget Toy
Take a small comfort object with you, such as a beloved plush, a stress ball, or a fidget toy. These can help keep you calm and relieve tension by giving you something to squeeze, pat, or fiddle with when you’re nervous.
Get By with a Little Help from Your Friends…
Do you have a trusted friend or family member that provides excellent moral support? Bring them with you. Even if they don’t come into the treatment room with you, just knowing they’re outside waiting for you can make you feel a lot calmer.
Sedation Dentistry
Your dentist offers sedation options to keep you feeling calm and relaxed during any type of dental procedure, including tooth extractions. Discuss your fears with her or him before your extraction and make arrangements for a sedative like nitrous oxide or oral conscious sedation. Please note that oral conscious sedation must be arranged in advance of your appointment, as you will need to pick it up at your pharmacy prior to your procedure.
Remember, it’s perfectly normal to be nervous or scared of having a tooth extraction, but your dentist is happy to help keep you feeling calm and safe during your procedure. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact them before your treatment, and feel free to try any of the above ideas to help you relax while you’re there.
